Recently, I came across investment data of some of the top venture capital firms while looking at their company websites, blogs, and publications. I decided to do some analysis of the companies (start-ups) within their portfolio to identify investment trends and understand the current business focus of most tech startups/founders. My analysis was on startups funded between 2015 & 2019. I started with Y Combinator (YC) and found some interesting observations to share. YC is an accelerator firm, founded in 2005 and has funded over 2,000 startups. Looking at YC Investment Data, I observed that business categories such as B2B, Healthcare and Consumer Goods and Services are some of the categories that are on the rise. Category such as Marketplace saw a sharp decline. Interestingly, Marketplace was at its peak in Winter 2015 and Summer 2017.

The question is, what's the direction of startups and venture capital firms/investors?

I decided to create an app to show trends in tech startups funded by venture capital firms by looking at their investment data. Starting with the Y Combinator Investment Trends. This app lets you explore Y Combinator data to understand general investment trends in most startups and the likely business categories most startups/founders are focusing on now.
